More on Nacotheque....
In 2007, the Nacotheque producers, Marcelo Cunning and Amylulita completed a successful mini-tour around the world - San Juan, PR (Circo “Cursi” album release party), Texas - (Austin & Houston for Rock y Roll Dia & Guest DJ appearance at a Miranda! concert), Spain (Barcelona, Bilbao, Valencia), Los Angeles, Tijuana, Chicago, Mexico City (Mexican Curious party w/ DJs Sonido Apokalitzin).
All kinds of cool people have danced the night away at Nacotheque NYC parties including noteable celebrities - Elijah Wood, Scarlett Johansson, Gael Garcia Bernal, Wendy James, Kinky, Chetes, Yudo, Los Amigos Invisibles, Zoe, Circo, Silverio, Calle 13, Mima, Volumen Cero.
Since February of 2006 Juan Ramirez (Marcelo Cunning) and Amylu Meneses (Amylulita) have been producing the Nacotheque party (nominiated “Best New Party of 2007” and dubbed “The Spanish MisShapes” by PAPER magazine.
The unique catch is that all the music is sung in Spanish. By blending their own backgrounds and musical tastes Marcelo and Amylu highlight new music from all over Latin America and Spain, providing an enviable collection of music, new and old, popular and obscure of rock n’ roll, new wave, indie rock, baile-funk, nouveau-eighties, electropop, disco, cumbia, punk, and some hip-hop.
The Nacotheque producers are beating the stereotypes of Spanish-sung music events and teaching people what else is out there in the indie/underground music scene.
They have been involved in various concerts and special events, including CIRCO, Moenia, Miranda!, PAPERtv, Queens Museum of Art, Cielo Latino: AIDS benefit, CINEMAROSA 3rd Anniversary Celebration, Larry Clark’s Wassup Rockers movie launch party, NYRemezcla. com launch party, Boarder Sessions at SXSW 2007, Guanabee. com launch party, and Rock n’ Roll Dia 2007.
Incredible live performances appeared on the stage in 2007 at Nacotheque NYC by artists such as Silverio (Mexico), La Prohibida (Spain), Circo (Puerto Rico), La Terremoto de Alcorcón (Spain), Zemmoa (Mexico), Todosantos (Venezuela), Sweet Electra (Mexico/NYC).
Noteable celebrities have guest DJed the party including Gil Cerezo (Kinky), Fofé (Circo), Memory Man (Zoé), DJ Afro (Los Amigos Invisibles), Dapunto Beat, DJ Buenavista (Sinnamon Records/Razzmatazz), and DJ Perotútehasvisto (Razzmatazz/Dancing Queen Festival).
What does the name Nacotheque mean anyway?
Though the name Nacotheque was made up of the words Naco (often used in Mexican Spanish to describe bad-mannered and poorly educated people. Kind of equivalent to the American “White Trash”) and Discotheque, it has a meaning all in it’s own. It represents Spanish-sung music from not just Mexico, but from around the globe and has opened a music box for anyone who calls themself a music fan. ....
